Die Besprechung gilt der remasterten Version von „Close to the Edge”.

Die Verdienste dieses Albums als eine der Kronjuwelen der progressiven Rockmusik sollten unstrittig sein. Dennoch hat - wie ich finde - das typisch Sphärische in Musik und Text von „Close to the Edge” im Gegensatz zu anderen Progrock-Meilensteinen aus den Jahren 1971/72 wie „Tarkus”, „Three Friends” oder „Pawn Hearts” etwas mehr Patina angesetzt.

Dennoch behält das Album bis auf den heutigen Tag eine gewisse Magie, und immer noch klingen die Melodien und Riffs in meinem Kopf noch tagelang nach, wenn ich „Close to the Edge” gehört habe. Das dezent vorgenommene Remastering von Rhino aus dem Jahre 2003 sollte man mit einer guten Anlage hören. Es sind Details, besonders in den Gitarren, zu hören, von denen man vorher nicht mal wusste, dass es sie gab. Dennoch könnte am Beispiel dieses Albums die alte Diskussion um Vinyl vs. CD wiederaufleben. Denn nach meinem Geschmack ist zwar mehr Transparenz erzielt, aber es sind auch etwas Harmonie und Balance der LP verlorengegangen.

Zumindest ist es auf der mir vorliegenden Edition mehr als vorher möglich zu studieren, wie die einzelnen Instrumente den damaligen einzigartigen Klang von Yes zusammensetzten. Ich höre jetzt heraus, dass das Fundament das Spiel von Steven Howe an den Gitarren ist.

Das Album an sich kann nichts anderes als 5 Sterne erhalten, diese remasterte CD-Version ist Geschmackssache.

This is a review of the remastered version of „Close to the Edge”.

The merits of this album as one of the crown-jewels of progressive rock are undoubted, though its spherical mood in both music and words has brought it more out of age than its prog-rock kin of the years 71/72 like „Tarkus”, „Three Friends” or „Pawn Hearts”.

Still „Close to the Edge” has some kind of magic and its melodies and riffs stay in my head for days once I heard the album again. To enjoy the new remastered release of Rhino from 2003 to full extent you will need a modern equipment. You can hear details you never thought were there especially in the guitars. Gained transparency compensates and may even exceed losses in harmony and balance of the original vinyl LP. What you like more depends on your taste.

At least it’s very interesting to study how the musicians on their now clearly separated instruments did their job to contribute to the unique sound of Yes in this era. I found the basis of the sound of „Close to the Edge” is the playing of Steve Howe.
